Indo-US Symposium on Ayurvedic, Siddha & Unani (ASU) drugs: Development and Marketing

December 2-4, 2009

International Guest House, NASC Complex, Pusa, New Delhi 110 012

The Indian systems of medicine viz., Ayurveda, Siddha, Unani and Homoeopathy predominantly use plant-based raw materials in most of their preparations in addition to some materials of minerals, metals and animal origin.

The importance of safety, quality and efficacy in such products has universally been acknowledged. There is an increasing demand for ASU / botanical drugs / dietary supplements in the developing countries and the industrialized developed world is also looking for the standardized botanical products. The need of the time is therefore, to subject Ayurvedic, Sidha & Unani (ASU) drugs / products to rigorous modern scientific testing and develop standards so as to maintain quality for global competitiveness.

The symposium will focus on current procedures for ASU / natural plant products – starting from sustainable supply of quality raw material to quality control, standardization and production of the finished marketable products which are clinically tested and enjoy the full confidence of consumers with respect to quality, safety and therapeutic claims on the labels in local, regional, and international markets.

The symposium will also provide a platform to Indian herbal drug / botanical supplement industry and other R & D institutes involved in research on botanical & ISM products to present their strengths / approaches in the research and manufacture of ISM / botanical drugs/ supplements and the visiting scientists from USA / Canada coming from various research / academic institutes, Industry and government regulatory authorities etc. to interact with Indian counterparts.

Such an interaction would help all the players in the trade of ISM /botanical products to understand consumer demands and quality parameters in global markets and develop methods of production that meet those demands of product safety, quality and efficacy, which either exceeds or corresponds to international standards. This would make these industries internationally competitive with greater share in the global market.

Speakers will be eminent national and international scientists and experts from industries, R & D Institutions, academia, nonprofit institutions, regulatory authorities and Centres of Excellence within India and abroad. Participants from USA will include experts from U.S. Food and Drug Administration and National Center for Natural Products Research, University of Mississippi, NIH, ABC, USP, and NCCAM.
